Local activities: Perret is a Breton village of mostly small stone built cottages, a large square and a magnificent church that is quite out of proportion to the 280 strong population. There is a bar on the side of the square, that also serves as the local shop and that takes orders for bread and croissants. Many of the inhabitants do not leave the sleepy little bywater from one month to the next. Why should they when everything is here, or comes here, including the mobile shop and the visiting meat delivery man. Even the clog maker sets up his workshop in one of the bars.
Bon Repos is one of the many beauty spots within a few minutes of Perret. In fact the lane beside Porh Rouzic leads directly there. Beside the cafe at the end of the lane, there is a narrow stone bridge over the river. To one side of the bridge there is a lovely weir, from the other side it is possible to start boating or canoeing trips. Overlooking this tranquil scene are the remains of an old abbey, which is still used as a centrepiece for festivals and celebrations. It is difficult to believe that all this is only a short way from the main road linking Rennes to Brest. A creperie and various other bars, some with outside eating areas, are within a few minutes walk.
The whole area is a mass of trees, this is the Western edge of the Foret de Quencan. Literally dozens of trails lead from the roads into the forest, which is a treasure trove of wildlife as well as a paradise for walkers. The paths that follow the river or canal are equally well suited to hikers as well as cyclists.
To the north of the forest is the Lac de Guerledan. The lake is tree lined along all of its banks except for small areas where there are man made beaches and boating pontoons. Most of the recreation areas have a little cafe or restaurant and generally a play area for younger children.
The River Blavet flows out of the lake and provides a number of beauty spots as it meanders its way down to the Chateau de Rohan, the only 15th century military fort in Brittany. This is just one of the many fine buildings close by that are linked by the Nantes Brest Canal, which then continues past Josselin, home to another famous castle.
There is so much to see and do. There is the prehistoric stone covered way at Cleguerac and the north coast is less than an hour away at St. Brieuc. The west coast with its famous holiday resorts, Quiberon, Carnac and Benodet are all within pleasant driving distance. Any visit to the coast should include lovely old Auray, an outstanding town, even in this incredible region where beauty and history go hand in hand.
