Movie shoots in Paris Ile-de-France
On-location in Ile-de-France
Ile-de-France is a giant movie set, a life-size studio that is constantly playing host to multiple film productions. Some locations are in continual demand and play a key role in the screenplay, while others serve more as a backdrop for the movie. From the Louvre museum, playground for the action in Belphegor, Phantom of the Louvre to the counter where drinks are served up at the Café des Deux Moulins, former workplace of the heroine in Amelie, the capital city abounds in anecdotes of film shoots and corners that have attracted the camera’s “gaze”. But the honor does not belong to Paris alone.
La Reine Margot in the Château de Vincennes, Danton and, very recently, Marie-Antoinette in Versailles, D’Artagnan’s Daughter (also known as The Revenge of the Musketeers) at Maisons Laffitte, Ridicule and Marquise at Vaux le Vicomte, and soon part of The Da Vinci Code at Condécourt…When Ile-de-France is onscreen, it not only plays host to stars, it’s a star itself. Cities, villages, parks and gardens are captured and projected onto screens, both small and large.
Still resonating in the French collective memory are “Glaude” (De Funès) and “Le Bombé” (Carmet) who lived in Brie-Comte-Robert at the time of La Soupe aux Choux.
Historic and crowd-attracting sites are obvious choices for film shoots but more prosaic public places also make an appearance. For instance, in The Bride Wore Black, the burial of Fergus (Denner), one of the suspected killers of Julie’s (J. Moreau) husband, takes place at the Gonnards Cemetery in Versailles. The hospital scenes in Fear Over the City (also known as The Night Caller) were not shot at Trinité but at the Antoine Béclère hospital in Clamart . In 1984, the arrival of the president of the French republic in Le Bon Plaisir was filmed at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport. Personal residences are also sometimes used by the production for film locations. The mill of Dannemois, property of Claude François, was the setting for the famous jogging scene featuring Bernard Frédéric and his “claudettes” in Podium.
Period castles, buildings loaded with historical significance, public spaces…onscreen or off, such sites have the capacity to inspire the imagination.
